A Duluth Remodel That Transformed a Cramped Layout Into a Bold, Functional Heart of the Home
What started as water damage became an opportunity to build something better. This Duluth-area family had a tight, inefficient kitchen layout and no true dining space—just a small island and a table pushed against the back of their living room sofa.
But they had a dream of something more: a place where children could be part of the rhythm, where prep and cleanup could happen together, and where real life could unfold, beautifully and practically.
At Hemma Living, we took that vision and translated it into a zoned, function-forward design that supports how they cook, gather, and grow every single day.
This Duluth, MN kitchen remodel, designed by our experts at Hemma Living, showcases how we transformed a small, inefficient space into a highly functional, family-oriented kitchen.
Initially prompted by water damage, the redesign now features distinct zones for cooking, cleanup, and connection. Highlights include a custom round island, Alder cabinetry, matte black hardware, a compact panel-ready dishwasher, deep appliance storage, a hidden pantry, and a separate snack station.
The design seamlessly blends practical functionality with bold color and layered materials to support the daily life of a younger family.
Before the Remodel: A Cramped Layout with Hidden Damage
This kitchen didn’t start with inspiration, but rather with mold.
When water damage beneath the sink led to the discovery of a long-term leak behind the walls, the family turned to insurance for help. However, with a referral from K&W Builders, they connected with us to explore options beyond a basic replacement.
The original space felt chaotic. A small island forced awkward circulation, the dining table was crammed behind a couch, and there was no actual “gathering” space…just workarounds.
They needed more than a kitchen refresh. They needed a kitchen that could work hard, welcome everyone, and support everyday life.
Zoned with Intention: Designing for Daily Flow
This space was designed from the inside out—starting with function and family flow. We divided the kitchen into thoughtfully separated zones:

Chef’s Zone
- Range, prep sink, full-size fridge, and two prep areas
- Open pantry (hidden from most views) keeps dry goods within reach
- Designed for focused cooking, without sacrificing connection
Cleanup Zone
- Large sink, trash, and a compact panel-ready dishwasher that disappears into the cabinetry
- Positioned away from the cooking triangle so someone can clean while others prep or relax
- Strategically bridges Chef’s zone and island
Coffee + Snack Station
- Around the corner sits a second fridge and snack zone
- Children can grab a drink or snack without stepping into the cooking path
- Makes it easy for guests or helpers to lend a hand or stay out of the way
Child-Friendly Storage
- Lower cabinetry holds dishes so that children can access them
- Encourages independence and shared responsibility
The Island: A True Workhorse
This kitchen lacked a formal dining room, so we created something better—a custom round island that serves as more than just an anchor for the space. It’s a hub of movement, creativity, and connection.
This island:
- Extends prep surfaces beyond the chef’s zone
- Supports baking, rolling dough, and unpacking groceries
- Hosts coloring books, schoolwork, laptops, and casual cocktails
- Becomes the go-to spot for birthday candles, BBQ spreads, and board games
It’s more than just the center of the kitchen—it has become the center of their life.
Bold Finishes with a Personal Touch

- Cabinetry: Painted in Sherwin Williams “Gale Force”, the lower cabinets offer a bold, moody blend of deep greens and vivacious blues
- Upper tones: Soft greys that read as white—lightening the space while coordinating with the countertops
- Wood tones: Horizontal Alder cabinetry adds depth and natural warmth
- Flooring: The tile floors were reused as proof that timeless design doesn’t require starting from scratch
- Hardware: Matte black finishes were chosen for their durability and fingerprint-friendly surface
- Lighting: Seeded glass pendants and mixed metal accents round out the space with quiet drama
Before & After: A Family Kitchen Reimagined

What was once tight and tiring now feels spacious, intuitive, and deeply livable—not because it’s large, but because it’s thoughtfully designed every step of the way.
